Oxford Club Shirt

The Oxford Club Shirt from Khakis' Spring/Summer 2025 collection is a modern
reinterpretation of the Oxford button-down shirt, a symbol of Ivy League
style. Originally designed to keep collars from flapping during polo matches
and equestrian sports, this shirt was introduced as ready-to-wear by Brooks
Brothers in 1896. Since then, it has become a staple of American casual style.
Crafted from a matte, sturdy Oxford fabric, the Khakis Oxford Club Shirt pays
homage to its heritage while refining it for the present. As its name
suggests, the Oxford shirt was favored by students at prestigious universities
in the UK and US, particularly the Ivy League, and gained mainstream
popularity through icons such as Miles Davis, Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, and
John F. Kennedy.
The latest iteration from Khakis is woven with 20s combed yarn, making it denser and more substantial than standard Oxford fabrics, ensuring durability and resistance to deformation over time. Its tightly woven structure minimizes wrinkles and maintains a crisp, structured silhouette. Vintage Oxford shirts serve as a reference point, with each detail thoughtfully adapted for contemporary styling. The collar, in particular, undergoes a meticulous finishing process to enhance its shape. Measuring 9 cm in length, it features a soft curvature and a subtly V-shaped back for a classic aesthetic. The collar points are precisely stitched and pressed for a sharp contour before being firmly secured to the collar stand. Additionally, the collar band is reinforced with mountain-shaped stitching, enhancing both durability and structure.
The Khakis Oxford Club Shirt strikes a balance between design and
functionality. While conventional shirts often feature a One Piece Yoke,
Khakis incorporates a Split Yoke to achieve a more structured silhouette and
greater flexibility. Both the outer and inner yoke panels are precisely cut so
that the fabric grain aligns with the shoulder seam, enhancing lateral stretch
for improved ease of movement. For striped fabric variations, the pattern is
symmetrically aligned at the center back, ensuring a visually balanced and
seamless flow along the yoke.
A box pleat at the center back adds volume for ease of movement, while the
pleat’s edges feature a finely finished loop detail for a refined touch. The
width of the pleat is designed to be slightly narrower, reminiscent of vintage
shirts, further emphasizing the casual appeal.
The left chest pocket is precisely cut to align seamlessly with the vertical
stripe pattern of the shirt body, maintaining visual continuity. Its bottom
edge is rounded for a softer silhouette, subtly enhancing overall balance.
The front placket is secured with double stitching, and at the bottom, a
folded triangular reinforcement—seen in select vintage shirts—adds structural
integrity. This construction results in a distinctive 人-shaped stitch detail,
reinforcing the shirt’s durability for long-term wear.
For buttons, the shirt features those made from tagua palm nuts, known for
their deep brown outer shell and ivory-like inner texture with a natural
sheen. These buttons are highly durable, resistant to temperature changes and
impact, and develop a rich patina over time, adding depth to the shirt’s
character.
Key seam finishes are completed with Bias finish, ensuring precision and elevating the overall craftsmanship. Rooted in the original Oxford cloth button-down design, this shirt seamlessly integrates classic aesthetics with contemporary functionality. Every design element is carefully connected, encapsulating the unique sensibility of Khakis. Just as the Oxford shirt has remained a timeless wardrobe essential, the Khakis Oxford Club Shirt is designed to be a lasting companion in daily life.
